I haven't heard that. There is the Pine Gap listening post with its
giant golf ball shaped dish covers hiding the direction pointed to by
the concealed antennas which is run by the US agency NSA and the
Australian DSD equivalent. Pine Gap would have been a target during
the cold war so there probably is an underground shelter nearby.

I recall seeing a programme about Oz where the temps are so hot the
inhabitants live underground.

You're thinking about the opal mining community of Coober Pedy. Most of the
population live below ground...there's even an underground hotel. It's
where they shot the Vin Deisel movie "Pitch Black" so you can see what the
area looks like!
